What happens on the day of the test? |

The day of the driving test is going to be a very eventful one. Make sure you arrive about 30 minutes to an hour before the scheduled time of the driving test. This will give you plenty of time to get ready and mentally prepare yourself for the test that lies ahead. The entire testing process should take you about 40 minutes. For those taking the extended driving test because of a driving ban, your test will take 70 minutes. Your driving test will consist of 5 parts. The first part will be a standard eye exam which will test how clearly you can see up to 20 meters away. All you have to do is read the numbers of a license plate from that distance. If you have less than perfect vision, it is recommended that you obtain prescription eyeglasses if you don’t already have some. You are allowed to wear glasses while you take the eye exam. The only thing is that your driver’s license will indicate that you need corrective lenses to drive. But hey, it’s better than nothing. After you pass the eye exam, you will begin taking the theory test. This test is made up of questions, which pertain to vehicle safety. One question will be a “tell me” question and the other will be a “show me” question. In other words, the “tell me” will involve explaining the steps of performing a particular function in the car and the “show me” will involve physically performing a particular function. If you get one of these questions wrong, you may be able to continue with the driving test. However, that wrong answer will start you off with points lost on your driving test. The third part of the driving test is to demonstrate your general driving ability. This is where the examiner gives driving directions to you beforehand and then you go out on the road and follow those directions. You’ll be expected to pull over to the side and pulling out of a parking space while another car is parked in front of you. The fourth part is demonstrating your ability to reverse the vehicle. Not only will you have to do reverse parking, but you will have to turn onto a road and go around a corner in reverse as well. If you’ve managed to get through that phase of the test, then you’ve made it to the final part. This is where you do independent driving for 10 minutes by following traffic signs and responding to verbal directions. The examiner won’t normally tell you during the test if you’ve made a mistake. They will just quietly mark off points as you continue to drive and follow their directions. The only time they’ll say something is if your driving is so bad that it is threatening the lives of other people on the road. Hopefully, you’ll come well enough prepared for the test to not be a danger to others on the road. Good luck – it’s not the end of the world if you fail your test, but, if you do, you could always find a cancellation and retake it as soon as possible. 53% of people fail their test on their first attempt so don’t be too down if this was to happen.
